What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a tiny titanium post or screw, that is surgically embedded into the jawbone. Once in place, the implant post serves as the root element of a prosthesis. A single implant is used to support a dental crown, while a series of implants can anchor a fixed partial bridge or full-arch appliance.

An implant-supported restoration usually consists of three parts: the implant post, an abutment, and the prosthesis. After the implant is in place, we attach the abutment to the top of the post. Abutments help link the implant post to your prosthesis while providing additional support.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process, like all restorative dentistry, begins with a consultation appointment. During your consultation, Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty may utilize advanced diagnostic technology, such as x-rays and CBCT scans, to gather a better understanding of your oral health. Once we determine that you are a suitable candidate for implants, we will develop a personalized treatment plan.

The dental implant procedure is usually broken up into multiple appointments. During your first appointment, we will make an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and place the implant post. Once the implant is in place, we will suture the incision. The number of implants you receive depends on the type of prosthesis you need.

Over the next several months, the implant and your jawbone will fuse. This process, which is integral to the success of your treatment, is known as osseointegration. In most cases, we cannot attach your abutment or restoration until osseointegration is complete.

After your implant and jawbone fuse together, we can schedule your second appointment. During this visit, we will place the abutment and take an impression. Your impression will be used to fabricate your final restoration. The fabrication process may take several weeks.

Once your final restoration is ready, we can schedule your final appointment. During this visit, we will remove the temporary appliance (if needed) and permanently attach your final restoration. Most implant-supported restorations are made using porcelain or zirconia, two durable and esthetically-pleasing materials.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants have become the industry standard for tooth replacements due to their many benefits. Most of these benefits stem from the process of osseointegration, which provides a powerful bond that mimics the relationship between tooth root and jawbone. Thanks to this process, implants can effectively support a restoration against the strongest forces of your bite.

In short, your implant-supported restoration will look, feel, and function just like your natural teeth. The ceramic materials we use can be shaped to match the appearance of enamel. Porcelain and zirconia even possess the same light-reflective properties, making your restoration indistinguishable from your remaining teeth.

Because the implant becomes a part of you, you never have to worry about discomfort or slips. Most implants can also be cared for without special accommodations. A strong hygiene regimen and routine checkups can ensure your implant lasts for several decades. With the proper care and maintenance, your restoration may even last a lifetime!
