Dentures (Complete & Partials)
According to the American College of Prosthodontists (ACP), roughly 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. Estimates also show that about 40 million U.S. adults have no teeth at all. If you are missing one or more teeth, finding a replacement option is an important decision. We here at Calapooia Family Dental may recommend a complete or partial denture to help restore the function and aesthetics of your smile.
What Is a Complete Denture?
A complete denture, as you may well know, is a removable appliance used to replace an entire arch of missing teeth. Most complete dentures consist of prosthetic teeth set in a flesh-colored acrylic base. Dentures designed for the upper arch typically have a base that extends over the palate, while lower arch dentures are horseshoe-shaped to accommodate the tongue.
Most complete dentures are fabricated using an impression of your gums, meaning they rely on these tissues for support. Dentures designed for the lower jaw can also be attached to dental implants. Dental implants keep the denture securely in place, provide additional support, and improve the durability and longevity of your appliance.
What Is a Partial Denture?
A partial denture is a removable appliance used to replace one or more teeth in a single arch. Partials are considered a minimally-invasive and cost-effective alternative to conventional bridges and implant-supported prostheses.
The false teeth of an upper arch partial are usually attached to a retainer-like base. Partials for both the upper and lower jaws also have metal clasps that wrap around the surrounding teeth to keep the denture in place.
If cosmetics are a concern, we may recommend "precision attachments" for your partial. Precision attachments typically utilize a key and lock mechanism that links to a series of dental crowns, resulting in a more discreet restoration.
The Denture Process
Like most restorative treatments, the denture process begins with a consultation. During your consultation, Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty will conduct a thorough examination to determine if a denture is right for you. Whether or not we suggest a denture largely depends on the status of your oral health and your personal preferences.
Once we decide on a denture, we can begin the fabrication process. If you need a complete denture and have a few remaining problematic teeth, the first step is extraction. Once your teeth are out, we may provide you with an immediate denture. After a brief healing period, we can take an impression of the gums. This impression will be used to fabricate your conventional denture.
Fabrication of a partial denture follows similar steps. These days, both partial and complete dentures are more durable and naturalistic than ever before. We utilize the best restorative materials, technologies, and techniques to ensure optimal results!
Caring for Your Denture
Because dentures are removable, they require special care and maintenance. Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty will give you a detailed set of care instructions. Cleaning your denture regularly and preventing it from drying out is crucial. With the proper care, your denture could last for many years!
