Routine Cleaning (Dental Prophylaxis)
We recommend that you see us for an exam and cleaning every three to six months to help you maintain excellent oral health. Dental cleanings are performed by one of our dental hygienists to remove plaque and tartar buildup from the surface of your teeth. Cleanings take about one hour, and are scheduled every three to six months, depending on your needs. After your cleaning, Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty will perform a dental exam.

Dental Exams
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends a routine check-up up roughly twice a year. A routine appointment with Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty will typically include a professional cleaning and a detailed examination of your teeth, gums, and other oral tissues.

Dentistry for kids
Calapooia Family Dental provides excellent dental care for children and teens. Oral health is important to your child's overall health and well-being. We are focused on prevention and helping to keep your child's teeth healthy.
Starting when your child turns one, we recommend children visit the dentist for an introduction to our office and counseling regarding proper hygiene and diet. Beginning at age three, your child should be seen for a cleaning and checkup every six months. Research has shown the benefits of starting children early with good dental hygiene. Fluoride treatment is offered twice a year for children along with their cleanings. We also offer tooth sealants to protect against decay in hard-to-reach places.

Periodontal Care (Scaling and Root Planing)
Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an infection affecting the tissue and bones that support your teeth. Irritation and damage can occur when bacteria, plaque, and tartar build up between the teeth and gums.
Your hygienist and Dr. Summers or Dr. Hagerty will evaluate your condition and recommend treatment. In some cases, a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing is done to remove buildup and allow the gum tissue to heal.

Periodontal Maintenance
Periodontal maintenance basically refers to various oral health care measures, which are taken to ensure that periodontal disease does not recur. This is achieved by keeping bacterial infection at bay. The maintenance care, however, also offers several other benefits, in addition to keeping the disease away.

Sports Mouthguards
If you participate in physical activities that put you at risk for dental trauma or injury, we strongly recommend a mouthguard. A mouthguard will protect your teeth and prevent dental emergencies.

Nightguards
If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), we may also recommend a nightguard. Many patients with bruxism tend to grind their teeth during sleep. A nightguard acts as a barrier that prevents enamel wear.
